So you’ve took the plunge and you’ve decided to join us at MAN v FAT Aintree. What do you need to know about joining us for the first session and all sessions going forward?
There will be a few items we’ll run through here, but there’s probably a lot more that you’ll learn as you progress through your journey. Let’s go through the basics though, it’ll be enough to get you started.

Where Do You Weigh In?
This is a simple straight forward question. We’re based at Goals in Netherton, and we’re based in the party room. This is really easy to find!
Simply head through the front door of Goals
- Opposite there’s a door for the pitches, and you’ll see reception on your left as well as double doors for the bar area.
- Before the pitches, there’s vending machines on the right.
- There will be a door propped open opposite these machines – You’ll find the coach Ste inside there ready to get you started.
What Happens at First Weigh In?
So, once you’ve found us, you need to get yourself weighed in and ready for your game. Ste will talk you through this when you arrive, but before you get started we need to check/take some very basic details for you.
- First, we’ll check your height.
- Then we’ll check your weight
- If you don’t weigh in, then you can’t play. This a strict, non-negotiable rule at MAN v FAT.
Both of these things need to be verified to ensure that you do qualify for MAN v FAT and that your % milestones are calculated correctly. As your first weight (also known as your baseline weight) is what we use to calculate them.
Once these are confirmed, we will run through the rules. Which we will go into further down here.
What Kit Do I Need for MAN v FAT?
It’ll vary based on venue, however for us here at Aintree you’ll need the following items as an absolute bare minimum.
- Shin pads! If you don’t have shin pads, you will not be able to play, this is non negotiable.
- A coloured top that matches your team.
- Appropriate footwear – at Goals we play on 4G pitch which is fake grass with black rubber crumb. Some lads play in boots, or astro turfs. There are also a small number that play in trainers, which is allowed but boots and astros may just give you better protection and traction in the rain.
- Fluids – We can’t reiterate this enough, especially on your first session. Make sure you stay hydrated!

The Rules on the Pitch
There are a number of rules that may vary from football you’ve played before. It may take you some time to get used to them and your team and referee will be on hand to offer guidance. However, these are your most important items to follow during your game.
- Game size – 5 a Side
- Slide tackles: These are NOT ALLOWED.
- Ball Height: The ball can be played over head height
- Throw ins: These are not a worry as our pitches are 5 a side caged
- Subs: Substitutes can roll on and off. So if you blow or burn out after 20 seconds on your first night, do not worry!
- Goalkeepers: Cannot leave the goal area – Leaving the area can result in a penalty
- Players: Cannot go in the goal area – This will result in free kicks or penalty kicks depending if defending or attacking team.
This should be enough to get you through your first session. However, the lads and the referee will all be there to support you. Any questions, you can ask your captain or your coach for assistance.
Most importantly of all, enjoy it!
